Seatrade Maritime "Investment in People" Award

Seatrade Investment to People Award

The American P&I Club Learning Management System developed by IDESS IT won the prestigious Seatrade Maritime "Investment in People" Award.

The American P&I Club sees managing crew competence as key to safety, security, and environmental protection. Although training is essential for developing competence, knowledge and skills are often lost soon after the training event, unless they are applied. To address this, the Club, together with IDESS IT developed an online Learning Management System that not only transfers knowledge but also monitors retention through periodic assessment. The output from the assessment of each candidate is analyzed. Any gaps identified are closed by links to relevant learning resources, thereby reinforcing retention systematically, supporting continual personal improvement, and maintaining crew competence.

Other finalists include:

  • Drydocks World Dubai;

  • Malaysian Maritime Academy (MMA) Sdn Bhd;

  • Manzanillo International Terminal - Panama, S.A.;

  • Martek Marine;

  • Merchant Navy Training Board 'Careers at Sea Ambassadors'; and

  • Port Tampa Bay.

The award is presented by Drew Brandy, Senior Vice President, Market Strategy, Inmarsat, and Grant Elrick, Global Sales Director, Seatrade, and collected by Dr. William Moore, Senior Vice President, Shipowners Claims Bureau and Manager, American Steamship Owners Mutual Protection & Indemnity Association and Captain Robert Rayner, President, IDESS IT at the Grosvenor House London, 30th of June 2017.

FREEFALL LAUNCHED LIFEBOATS

Freefall Lifeboats are an effective way to abandon ships or evacuate offshore installations, in an emergency.
The first ship to have a freefall lifeboat installed was the bulk carrier m/s TARCOOLA. This lifeboat was the first to be freefall launched from a ship, during trials at the Gøtaverken, Oresund shipyard in 1977. Since then, freefall lifeboats have become the most common type of lifeboat installed in new-buildings. The first electric powered freefall lifeboat was launched in April 2019.
